GCSE mathematics linked pair pilot

There are important changes in GCSE mathematics. Here you can find out what's happening and how to get involved.

We're working on the development of new GCSE mathematics qualifications that will engage learners, enable progression and meet the requirements of the revised secondary curriculum. This work involves:

  • implementing a new single GCSE in mathematics for teaching from September 2010
  • developing a second pathway based on a linked pair of GCSE mathematics qualifications for teaching in pilot centres from September 2010.

The single GCSE in mathematics will reflect the programme of study for key stage 4. Both this GCSE and the pilot qualifications will enable progression to level 3 in mathematics as well as other subjects.

The linked pair of GCSEs will encompass the requirements of the single qualification while ensuring a richer experience of mathematics, increased recognition of achievement and encouraging further study. Criteria frameworks for the pilot qualifications have been endorsed by the regulator, Ofqual, and will be kept under review.

The pilot qualifications recognise the effort required by students of GCSE mathematics and reflect the structure of English GCSEs from 2010. In so doing, they address one of the outstanding recommendations of Professor Adrian Smith's 2004 report Making mathematics count.

Independent evaluation

An independent evaluation will consider the quality of the qualifications and the criteria frameworks.
Recommendations for the future of GCSE mathematics provision will be made for ministers to consider. New subject criteria will be developed and consulted upon and specifications that meet those criteria will gain accreditation.

Mathematical pedagogy perspectives

To help teachers prepare for the pilot, QCDA has commissioned well-respected educationalists to provide perspectives on mathematical pedagogy:

These materials look at how ongoing curriculum and pedagogy development projects relate to GCSEs in mathematics and are designed to provide a starting point for teachers developing ideas for delivering the pilot qualifications.

Find out more

You can view the programme of study for mathematics on the National curriculum website and the frameworks for the pilot qualifications on the Ofqual website.

Our Changes to GCSE mathematics factsheet explains what will be happening from September 2010 and addresses some of the implications.

There's a factsheet on the GCSE mathematics pilot qualifications for 2010, which introduces the pilot and highlights some important issues – eg, how functional skills are incorporated.

We've also created a PowerPoint presentation on the GCSE mathematics pilot qualifications for 2010, which outlines the background and aims of the pilot, and the benefits the new GCSEs offer.

Get involved

We want learners, parents/carers, centres, employers and higher education institutions to know about the pilot qualifications and understand their purpose. We're also involving the wider stakeholder community (for example, science, engineering and technology stakeholders). We're holding focus group meetings, so if you'd like to attend email your contact details to mailto:GCSE2010@qca.org.uk, indicating the group you represent (eg schools, higher education etc).
